“You wouldn’t believe how beautiful the country is, out beyond the maps.”
The wooded trail was lovely through a thick forest as we began the climb up to Blanca Lake two weeks ago. Birds soared from tree to tree singing songs of freedom and life. Fog rolled in and out of the hills giving us sneak peaks of the beauty surrounding us. As we neared the lake I took off my traction and continued hiking with excitement to see the turquoise alpine waters of Blanca Lake.
In just 3.5 miles, we ascended up 3,300′ and then down 600′ on a narrow trail to the lake. Snow covered the last 2 miles of the trail making the last leg of our hike quite technical. If you plan to hike to Blanca Lake this spring, plan to bring micro-spikes! It took us just under 3 hours to reach the lake and a little over 2 hours to hike back to the car. We spent an hour at the lake enjoying Starbucks via and lunch on a lookout viewpoint above the lake. The tops of nearby peaks – Columbia, Monte Cristo, and the Keyes peered out between the clouds. Thankful for this memorable day in the mountains!
